Identity vs Actions

I don’t remember where I heard this piece of advice but I feel like it can resonate with any high performer. As an elite athlete, musician, artist, writer, or business owner, it is important to not set your personal view of your identity as that thing. This type of thinking is easy to get sucked into, especially when having done that thing since a young age. No matter what, at some point, there will be roadblocks. Athletes and musicians can get injuries and burnout, writers and artists get a block, and business slows down, it’s important to remember that these are things you do, not who you are. You do weightlifting, you are not a weightlifter. You play music, you are not a musician. When these inevitable roadblocks pop up, remember that, and hopefully you have spent time developing who you are as a person, and not just the things that you do.
