4 Tips To Bust Through a Lifting Plateau

At some point in every persons lifting career, they will hit a roadblock with their progress. It's unavoidable, but when you are in it, it can feel like you'll never get through it.

Here are a couple pointers for those of you stuck in the mud.

1) Trying figuring out ways to make light weights feel heavy. This can be done by pausing your lifts at the hardest point of the lift, moving slower than normal throughout the lift, or try and increase your work capacity, meaning do the same amount of reps, sets, and weight, but gradually decrease the amount of time it takes to complete them.

2) While warming up your lifts, try moving every single rep as FAST as possible. This doesn't mean move without control, the point of being fast is to be as fast as possible WHILE maintaining control. A good way to do this is to practice making the eccentric (lowering) portion of the lift slow, like you are pulling back a slingshot, and the concentric (raising) portion of the lift is letting go of that slingshot.

3) Address you nutrition. You and I both know that you will never feel or move great if you don't. Stop going out to eat, start cooking at home, eat mostly meat, veggies, and fruit, and you'll change your life.

4) Stop using lifting crutches like a weight belt, knee wraps, weightlifting shoes etc. for a while. While all of these are useful, if you NEED them to lift, they aren't helping you as much as they could. Think of them as tools to boost your performance, not things you need to hit a baseline performance.
